Atlantic Speech and Debate Club Membership Agreement 2019-2020
Atlantic Speech and Debate Club (ASDC) is a parent-run club and parents are required to participate at club meetings.
ASDC is geared for participation in the National Christian Forensics and Communication Association (NCFCA)and STOA. We are a competitive club and view competition as a means to an end. The competitions are great tools to “check on learning”, practice communication skills and provide training opportunities for our students.
ASDC is an all-volunteer club. We are here to assist you and your student for communication success however, it is the parents’ ultimate responsibility to educate themselves and ask questions regarding the rules of our club and league, which are available at www.NCFCA.org and www.stoausa.org
Students (with the parents help) are responsible for finding their own material with which to compete, however topic/content must be approved by the ASDC coach before the material can be used in competition. This will prevent wasted time and potential embarrassment for our students.
There is a monetary cost for participation in ASDC as well as personal time and commitment. This includes a partnering for coaching fees that are non-refundable and run throughout the fall and spring. The coaching fees are included within the club dues.
ALL Atlantic students are required to participate in at least two tournaments within the competition year and assist with local tournaments.
ASDC is based on Judeo, Christian faith and recognize Yaweh as the One true God and Yeshua (Jesus the Christ) as His Son. We believe in the Old and/ or New Covenant teachings:
I understand that the leaders and parents working in this group are volunteers. I will be appreciative of their efforts. One way I will do this is by being courteous and respectful.
I understand that timing is of critical importance in running any kind of classes or tournaments and that tardiness on my part will be a hindrance to the rest of the group. Therefore, I agree to do my utmost to be punctual at all Atlantic events.
I understand that arranging speech judges to hear my piece is a complicated process. Therefore, I agree to try my best to be present at all classes and speech competitions and to notify the leader in advance of absences. My parents will contact the leader or tournament director in the event of illness.
I agree to abide by the following dress code:
Club meetings: Casual – Students should dress neatly, modestly, also appropriately for the weather. Shirts should cover the shoulder, the midriff, and the back and should not be low-cut or tight. Jeans (without holes) are also permitted.
Tournaments: Professional Attire -
Gentlemen: suits (or sport coats with dress slacks) and ties, dress shoes.
Ladies: skirt suits (hem below the knee), pant suits, or dresses (hem to bottom of knee), dress shoes.
I will strive to do all I can to have good relationships with all the members and their families. I have read and agree to follow the principles of Matthew 18 in resolving conflicts.
I agree to complete my assignments on time unless I have the prior permission of the leader to turn them in late. I agree to have my selections and speeches approved by the leaders before I begin to commit them to memory. I agree to find new material for my speech(es) if my leaders find my choice(s) to be inappropriate, overused, or in violation of NCFCA/STOA rules. It is my understanding that Atlantic strives to the best of our knowledge and understanding to abide by the guidelines and principles of the NCFCA/STOA speech rules, and I agree to this also. If there is a dispute about the interpretation of the rules, I will honor and abide by the understanding of Atlantic’s head coach in applying the interpretation of the speech rules. If I have been inadvertently misapplying the NCFCA/STOA speech rules, I will comply with them when it is brought to my attention.
I agree to have my piece(s) memorized by the assigned dates. This date may vary depending on how many pieces I have to learn, and will be agreed upon by both the student and the leader. If I fail to learn the pieces in the time frame agreed upon by the leader and myself, I may be excluded from club participation until I have fully memorized them.
In order to run the club in an orderly and respectful manner, I understand that I will be asked to present my pieces during club time, and I will do so unless it has been prearranged with the coach that I have an excused reason not to do so. Failure to present during club time may result in being dismissed from the class. I may also be asked to present my pieces during tournaments for the general audience, and will make my best effort to be helpful in this area. I will bring my script to each club time, and understand that without a script, I will not receive coaching in that event.
Statement of Faith
There is one God eternally existing in three persons: the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit. (Matthew 3:16, Matthew 28:19, John 10:30, 2 Corinthians 13:14)
Man is sinful and therefore separated from God, who is holy and perfect. (Isaiah 53:5-9, Romans 3:23, I Peter 1:15-16)
Jesus Christ paid the eternal penalties for our sin through His death on the cross. (Luke 24:46, I Peter 2:21)
Jesus Christ also resurrected body and ascended into heaven and will return one day to fulfill His kingdom. (Matthew 28:6, Revelation 19:11)
Only through Jesus Christ and the grace of His provision of salvation, may we be saved from eternal punishment, enter into God's family and receive eternal life, (Ephesians 2:8-9, Roma 6:23, Romans 8:11, I John 1:9)
The Bible is the inspired, inerrant, infallible and authoritative Word of God and the truth for Christian faith and practice. (2 Timothy 3:16-17, 2 Peter 1:20-21, John 17:17, 1 Thessalonians 2:13, Psalm 19:7-11, John 6:67-69)
We believe that God wonderfully and immutably creates each person as male or female. These two distinct, complementary genders together reflect the image and nature of God, (Genesis 1:26-27 )
We believe that the term "marriage" has only one meaning: the uniting of one man and one woman in a single, exclusive union, as delineated in Scripture. (Genesis 2:18-25)
We believe that God intends sexual intimacy to occur only between a man and a woman who are married to each other. (1 Corinthians 6;18; 7:2-5, Hebrews 13:4)
